Shrimpers Trust Walk to the Orient 11/15/2003We've been contacted by our counterparts at Southend United, Shrimpers Trust,
with the following fundraising information. Any involvement will be greatly
appreciated, whether it be joining in the walk, sponsorship or acting as support
vehicle: ---
Our latest fundraising scheme is a sponsored walk from Roots Hall to Brisbane
Road on Saturday 21st February 2004. The 36 mile walk is presently expected to
take 10 hours to complete, and based on arrival at Leyton Orient's ground at
2:30pm ready for the 3pm kick off, means a start in Southend of 4:30am.
Our flag-bearing principal participant will be Terry Jeffreys, who is
currently in training to complete the event. Terry has arranged with Orient that
any participant completing the entire trip can finish the journey on the centre
spot of the Brisbane Road pitch before match kick off.
We appreciate that only a hardy few of our members would contemplate walking
the whole distance. However, there is no doubt some of you will be prepared to
assist the fundraising by joining Terry at certain stages of the walk and, Ian
Botham-like, walking part of the journey with him and hopefully being sponsored
yourselves.
We will have a water and vaseline carrying support vehicle and transport
placed at various staging posts. This will enable someone who starts at The
Jolly Cricketers but is exhausted at Gallows Corner to be transported to the
match, and still be able to help us by raising money for each mile completed.
You do not have to start at 4:30am. You could, for example, (in theory) drive to
Wanstead and walk the last few miles. Then, walk back to your car after the
match (although much less likely to get any sponsors for this stage!).
Any other ideas will be given careful consideration.
The next stage is for you to contact Terry if you are prepared to sponsor
him, by telephoning him on 01268 523974 or e-mailing terry.jeffreys@btinternet.com.
Or, if you are prepared to walk, contact Alan Perry on 01702 476458 for a form
and details of the route. Terry intends to do a dry walk and we will provide
start time and distances at each landmark shortly, along with a precise route
map and where the support vehicles will be.
If you would be prepared to help us by acting as a support vehicle, situating
yourself and vehicle at one of our pitstops during the day, we would also very
much appreciate your offers.
