The Olympic Stadium: How the Hammers Struck Gold
5/8/2015

LOFT has long argued that the deal to convert the Olympic Stadium into football use would see an eye-watering amount of public money being spent on a single commercial enterprise.

Back in 2012 we said that a reported spend of up to £200m for conversion was "barely credible", later that the £15m contribution by West Ham was "a derisory amount". We were sceptical that the cost for such a conversion could even be kept to that inflated £200m cost, and we were right; the final cost has been revealed as £272m, making the deal given to West Ham - a club that will benefit from a TV deal worth over £5 billion - seem ever more like a gift from the public purse.

LOFT did its own digging via Freedom of Information requests into the secret terms of the deal. Others have been carrying out their own investigations, and tomorrow (6 August) at 7pm on BBC One London, the BBC will be transmitting a programme entitled 'The Olympic Stadium: How the Hammers Struck Gold'.

The programme pledges to investigate "a deal that is shrouded in secrecy, and that could make the club owners even richer while leaving us to foot the bill". It is only being transmitted in the London region but will be available on BBC iPlayer for 7 days afterwards.
